I often wonder why people who call themselves "religious" are sometimes so nasty and condescending to homeless people. Does treating people with compassion only apply to those people in your same economic bracket or above? Wouldn’t you want compassion if you were a victim of circumstance?

Granted there are people who have made bad choices and that’s the reason that they are homeless. Haven’t we all done things we later regretted and wish we could change?

I’m not even advocating giving the homeless money. I’m advocating that we treat them like human beings and respect their dignity.

Just to let people know, the leading cause of homelessness is because people don’t have health insurance. If people had health insurance, it would help everyone.

I want to start a womens shelter where workers and volunteers are required to treat abused/homeless women with respect. Depending on the location, I have considered other options like a community center, rehab clinic or even a free clinic instead of homeless shelter.

As you probably have already heard, gay marriage will most likely become legal in Washington DC later today. The Catholic Church is a desperate effort to promote their hateful, mean spirited agenda threatened to cut church programs helping the cities homeless if it is approved. Luckily, the law makers have refused to give into the Catholic church’s demands considering the Church’s programs are funded by government money. It’s funny that the church acts like the money is coming their own pocket.

In advance: congratulations to DC same sex couples! Happy marriages to everyone! :-)

I’m looking for names and possibly contact info of agencies, organizations, churches etc. that provide assistance, advocacy or shelter for domestic violence, child abuse and homelessness.

Location isn’t a big deal.. I’m compiling a resource, but I would prefer to have the smaller not usually widely known places.

    thanks.
I KNOW I’m not gonna get a million answers from this forum.. so I’m not worried about quantity.. No offense but violence doesnt restrict itself to one location.. If any 1 answer i can get from here helps the one person looking for that particular location.. then I’m glad.
OK.. maybe I SHOULD say that I’m looking for US resources only.. but I really will take any..

I chose to go to college, studying until mid-night, feeling all the anxiety and presser to pass an exam. Now, I work 60 to 70 hours a week to make a good pay check. So, why would I give my money to a person who chose to not go to school and chose not to work? In fact he or she chose to get up around noon and come to me on the street and ask me for my money I just worked 12 hours a day six days a week for. I want to ask him,” How many hours did you work last week?” In my way of thinking if you don’t work you should starve to death in the street. On “Career Builder.com” in my city there are over 350 job openings right now. And please, I am not talking about the people who lost their jobs then their house and want to work. I am talking about the people who chose to be homeless and who chose to not work.
Well, Desirae Rose in my city you can rent an apartment for 0 a month, so you wash dishes for 6 hours in the moring at .00 an hour that . Then you work at night at Wendy’s 6-7 hours at .00 an hr. that’s another36-42 dollars. So lets see OMG that’s 60 a month. They are just lazy!
That sounds fair how about we give them all the money we make and our house and car and we will be homeless. Lets reward people for not working, lets tell them you and your son and your son’s son will never have to work ever again we will take care of you. You say you’re a strong person and you could work if you wanted to, but no this is America will want you not to work drink and smoke crack until 3:00am get up around 12:00 pm and we will feed you and give you more money to buy more crack and beer, and come on over to the shelter so you can get a good night’s rest. We will work and pay taxes to fund the shelter and give you money. This is America.

I’m just kind of hanging out at this point, I have nothing to do besides basic survival stuff and I’d like to actually get a job and apartment again but it’s kind of impossible when you don’t have an address, place to shower/shave/store clothes and important documents, no phone, no transportation, etc.

Any organizations that will have contacts specifically for helping the homeless become employed or get some kind of housing?
