I have a H1-B visa that is still good for 2+ yrs and I am marrying my fiance (US citizen) this September in the US. I really don’t like my job and would like to leave my employer as soon as possible, so I’d like to know how long do I have to wait to be able to quit my job (or change to another employer) once I am married?
It takes quite a long time to get your actual green card that way. however, if you file the petition, the I-485 adjustment of status form and the I-793 work authorization request at the same time, you should get an employment authorization document within several months, and with that you can work for whomever wants to hire you. Check out http://www.uscis.gov and look at the form section. read the instruction sheet for the I-485. there’s lots of other information for you there as well.

As soon as you get your work permit from the status adjustment application!
Quit – as soon as you get the receipt from USCIS that they have your application, you can get off the H1 and stay legally.
Other job – If you apply for a EAD with your green card, you will get it in about 3 months
Green card – about a year
